Job Description

Job Purpose

To provide coverage for patient care for Emergency Medicine at Ben Taub General Hospital. This is a critical piece of the clinical service that will help maintain coverage within the Emergency Center.


The physician assistant is expected to demonstrate competency in the following areas:

  • Productivity needs to meet or exceed standards as set by the Section and/or Department.
  • Keep up with continuing medical education as per college and section requirements.
  • Renewing and meeting all required licenses and certification requirements.
  • Familiarize with EPIC- electronic medical records and document all patient encounters as needed.
  • Complete all documentation in a timely manner so that billing and other administrative tasks can happen smoothly to ensure a robust operational system.
  • Maintaining credentialing at all times to ensure practice is not disrupted.


Job Duties

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations.
  • Perform, order, and interpret diagnostic procedures in accordance with relevant health concerns of the patient.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments.
  • Maintain records and write orders and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records.
  • Provide follow-up health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established with the supervising physician.
  • Communicate with physicians, nurses, patients, and the family members of patients concerning patient care.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Required:

  • For Nurse Practitioner: Master's degree in Nursing.
  • For Physician Assistant: Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.


Certification/Licenses/Registration:

  • For Nurse Practitioner: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department.
  • For Physician Assistant: Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department.


Experience Required: 1-2 years of experience.
