The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and be responsible for the following:
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Protestant Music Director Services
The Musician agrees to furnish the following described services at the locations, intervals, and times specified by the Vandenberg SFB Chapel. The Musician shall:
a. Lead a professional Christian worship music experience, as directed by Lead Protestant Chaplain (hereafter referred to as Chaplain), or his/her designee. The Musician, in coordination with the Chaplain, will direct the Protestant Worship Musician (hereafter referred to as Musician), if available. The coordination with the Chaplain and/or Musician may require additional meetings, in addition to the worship services and rehearsals.
b. Serves as Music Director providing the music activities for the VSFB Protestant community. The Musician shall provide labor and management to support the responsibilities outlined within this JOB DESCRIPTION. Directorship includes, but is not limited to leading, training, scheduling, preparing and processing music for the Protestant service in collaboration with singers, accompanists, and/or musicians, as available.
c. Directs music activities during rehearsals and worship services, including special services.
1. Special services include but are not limited to: memorial services, funeral services, combined/ecumenical services, faith specific holidays, and occasional support for special events.
2. Provide musical directorship for a minimum of 1 rehearsal and 1 worship service each week, each lasting 1-2 hours.
d. Establish weekly rehearsal times with the choir/praise team and provide musical direction and leadership. Arrive fifteen minutes prior to the rehearsals, and ensure all music and necessary equipment are ready. Both congregational singing and special music will be rehearsed.
e. Arrive thirty minutes prior to the start of the Protestant worship service in order to direct preparation, set-up necessary instruments and practice as needed.
f. Remain present for the entire time period involved in any rehearsal, performance or worship service contracted.
g. Recruit, train and maintain a volunteer base for any program needs, including choir/praise team.
h. Assist the Chaplain in developing the following as pertains to the Protestant music ministry: annual calendar of events, Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund budget, appropriated fund budget, and core volunteer training requirements.
i. Select appropriate music that corresponds to the theme, sermon topic, and/or Scripture readings in coordination with the Chaplain and Musician, including any musical accompaniments which may include but not limited to prelude, offertory, postlude, choral, anthems, or solos. Music selections must be submitted no later than noon on Wednesday each week.
j. Coordinate any special musical performances for worship service(s) with the Chaplain at least seven (7) days prior to performance.
k. Become familiar with operating any required electronic audio/visual equipment to include organization of presentation slides, and is responsible for the training of volunteers in accordance with chapel policies.
l. Ensure that all equipment and/or furnishings are turned off and/or returned to their proper place following services and rehearsals. Ensure cleanliness and security of all facilities utilized in conjunction with the program.
m. Support the ministry of the chapel staff and congregation.
n. Be able to resolve interpersonal conflicts and promote constructive working relations.
o. Be positive, spiritually sensitive, and able to work with Chapel staff members, all military personnel, Chapel volunteer lay leaders, & Chapel volunteers.
p. Be responsible for all damages, claims, liabilities, costs, or attorneys’ fees that arise from or relate to performance of this contract or which are caused or contributed by the musician during the performance of this agreement
q. Coordinate all support requirements with the Chaplain or their designated representative.
r. Return any and all government owned music scores and equipment obtained in the performance of the required duties following the last service provided under the contract.
s. Not engage in the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials by photocopying or any other means that would expose the government to liability for penalties under existing or future copyright laws.
t. Provide an equally qualified alternate to perform duties in the event of a known absence, upon prior approval by the Lead Protestant Chaplain. Lead Protestant Chaplain approval should be given at least two (2) weeks prior to the absence. Approval of a replacement will be handled on a case by case basis
3. VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS: Catholic Music Director (CLIN 1)
a. Serve as the Chaplain Corps Volunteer Supervisor for Catholic Music
b. Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers for all Catholic Music programs. Ensure all planned programs have adequate volunteer support.
c. Ensure volunteers meet all DoD and Air Force volunteer policy requirements to include:
1. Complete DD Form 2793, Volunteer Agreement for Appropriated Fund Activities & Non Appropriated Fund Instrumentalities, certifying their understanding of their roles and responsibilities as a volunteer.
2. Complete chapel non-disclosure agreement to certify understanding of privileged communication while volunteering in religious programs.
3. Maintain daily record of hours volunteered.
d. Ensure all personnel, working in programs involving minors in the performance of their duties during Chaplain Corps programs, have completed a Criminal History Background Check and comply with Line of Site Supervision (LOSS).
e. Create and maintain a master Catholic Music program volunteer list and contact information.
f. Provide initial and annual orientation & training for program volunteers.
g. Comply with all DoD and Air Force volunteer policy requirements as outlined on the Chapel SharePoint site.
4. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
The Musician must:
a. Be at least 18 years of age.
b. Have a high school diploma or equivalent. A Bachelor degree or greater in music performance is preferred, but not required.
c. Be able to communicate clearly both orally and in writing in English.
d. Be able to lead/direct singing for worshiping community
e. Have a minimum of two years of experience as a music director/musician in a church environment, or equivalent, preferably leading church choir/praise team in a Protestant worship setting.
f. Be able to proficiently direct choir/praise team, choral groups, or soloist, for music during worship services. The Musician must possess ability to competently blend vocalists with instrumentalists, as available.
g. Possess a general working knowledge of various forms of Protestant music styles (e.g. contemporary, traditional, gospel, etc.), and be able to coordinate music to appropriate church season, worship service and/or special services.
h. Be able to sight-read, transpose, and improvise music according to various forms of Protestant worship.
i. The musician must attend a qualifying interview/audition and furnish a resume with academic and work related references prior to award of contract.
j. Undergo a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Background Check, receive a final favorable suitability or fitness determination, and be current on all periodic reinvestigations.
